Three friends have been diagnosed with Cancer in the last three months. It breaks my heart every time I hear this. We are not winning the war on Cancer, but I believe it’s possible, just not with more drugs.
Cancer is the reason I ended up in the field of nutrition thirty plus years ago, (my husband Ed’s cancer) it is a passion to share the tools for prevention. I realize many of you may have had cancer and are on the other side or may know someone who currently has or had cancer, or you may be in the midst of treatment right now. Whatever your story, the tips and tools I will be giving you can be powerful for prevention or recovery.
There are many factors that can contribute to Cancer but I believe the #1 factor is diet. Yes, I have known people who have been diagnosed with Cancer that had a good diet, but it is my belief the majority do not.
Colorful Fruits and Vegetables
We all have heard this before! The American Cancer Society say’s “5-7 servings a day” but the reality is we see the average person eat 1-2 and they are usually low in antioxidants (bananas, apples). Think colored “flesh”, carrots, banana squash, sweet potatoes, red peppers, tomatoes, green vegetables and berries. These are your cancer fighters, loaded with antioxidants! Eat as many of these seasonably and Organic if possible. Go to www.EWG.org to find the list for the Dirty Dozen (most heavily sprayed) and the Clean Fifteen (least sprayed) so you know what to buy Organic!
- ”Add in” a new colorful fruit, vegetable or Super Food you have never tried before!
- Look for one recipe to make each week that can include two colorful vegetables or Super Foods.
There are foods that are know to be anti-cancer around the world and used by many cultures that rarely have cancer. Ancient Wisdom is truly amazing and with science proving it!
Curcumin or Turmeric
There are hundreds of scientific studies demonstrating how curcumin inhibits the growth of various cancer cells including colon, liver, pancreatic, bladder, stomach, kidney, blood (luukemia), prostate, ovarian, bone, brain, breast and even skin cancer! Curcumin triggers apoptosis, or programmed cell death, which is the body’s natural way of ridding itself of damaged cells, AKA, cancer cells. 100-200mg daily has been shown to achieve these results.
Allicin or Garlic
Onions, garlic, leeks, chives, green onions and shallots all contain allicin. Garlic is full of sulphur compounds which support liver detoxification pathways especially for hormonally related cancers. Garlic has been demonstrated in studies to lower the risk of developing stomach, colon, prostate, and intestinal cancers. The World Health Organizations suggests eating one clove of garlic daily. I love using my garlic “press” and putting it in home-made salad dressings, in almost all soups, stews, casseroles, stir fry’s and if your brave, a smoothie! Have your breath mints handy 🙂
Our gut health is the center of our immune system; 80 percent of our immune cells are in our gut. So looking after the healthy bacteria there is so important for cancer prevention. Sauerkraut and Kimichi are a couple of the fermented foods that are easy to add into your diet on a daily basis. Just a Tablespoon daily packs trillions of probiotics and enzymes. Yes, probiotics are good but “real” food is better!
This food is consumed around the world and recognized for its super food qualities. The PPAR receptor found inside the nucleus of cells is activated by chlorophyll. This receptor is used in the transcription phase, when a gene’s DNA is copied to make an RNA molecule. The cell actually “opens up” during this phase and toxic substances can be removed. Chlorella increases Glutathione levels and Glutathione is your “master” antioxidant and vital for detoxification in the liver. Glutathione also regenerates Vitamin C and Vitamin E, both antioxidants. Chlorella also removes heavy metals! Chlorella is usually found in a “green” powder you can add to soups and smoothies.
Are usually found at natural foods stores and even farmers markets but you can get a “sprout” kit and make these and other sprouts at home! Broccoli sprouts contain a high amount of the cancer-busting and immune boosting substance sulforaphane. Sulforaphane has proven to be a strong cancer inhibitor, especially of Breast Cancer. It creates apoptosis (cancer cell death) and also boosts Natural Killer cell activity, your roaming army!
This isn’t an exhaustive list but maybe you have heard of these Super Foods before and wondered what they do in the body. I encourage you to “add in” one or more of these foods into your diet this coming week. Be INTENTIONAL in your consumption of Anti-Cancer foods! It’s so easy to get stuck in a “rut” with eating the same foods. You may find you fall in love with a Cancer preventive food!
